Some of them are trying to hide assets or aren't paying their debtors because they're irresponsible cheapskates. There's nothing wrong with being a cheapskate—it's just a matter of perspective, right?—but bankruptcy is often the result of circumstances that were beyond the individual's control. Bankruptcy will be the logical conclusion If you lose your job and can't pay your mortgage and then can't qualify for credit card consolidation because you've maxed out all your cards, what do you do? Maybe start stealing from places you work? Maybe sell off some of your belongings on eBay? In either case, if you don't reach out for help, bankruptcy will be the logical conclusion.
