Can a spouse's obesity become the grounds for divorce?

The truth is that weight gain is never a valid reason for divorce. In fact, it's the opposite - it's an indicator of a failing relationship, a lack of sexual connection, or a failure to prioritize your health. It's a very rare reason to divorce your spouse, but if you think your relationship is headed for trouble, it's time to get help and begin planning ahead.

Weight loss after bariatric surgery

The number of marriages that end due to weight loss after bariatric surgery is increasing, according to a study. The chances of divorce are double for people who go through the surgery and then lose weight. Despite the fact that the rate of divorce in the U.S. is below the average of 5%, bariatric surgery is affecting the love life of many people.

The conflict between overweight and normal-weight couples

Couples with major weight differences often clash and argue. This can lead to serious resentment if the other person doesn't want to make changes to their weight or has difficulty accepting the other person's weight. It's important to learn to accept one another's weight in order to build a strong marriage.

Relationship dissatisfaction after bariatric surgery

Although bariatric surgery is a life-changing procedure, research on the long-term effects on relationships has been limited. In this study, we examined whether changes in relationship satisfaction (RS) follow bariatric surgery. We also considered the role of age and sex as predictors of RS. In total, 145 men and women were recruited, and scheduled to undergo bariatric surgery between September 2015 and June 2018. RS was measured with a standardized and reliable self-report questionnaire, which was completed before and six months after surgery.

Effects of marital transitions on obesity

Recent studies on marital trajectories and health have focused on marital duration. Although this concept has been largely theoretical, more recent studies have found a correlation between marriage duration and lower disease incidence. This effect is both time and trajectory-dependent, although it has also been found to vary between men and women.

Healthy meals and outdoor activities for a spouse

If you're married to a spouse who is overweight, it's important to focus on self-care for both of you. Overweight people are at higher risk for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart disease. They're also less likely to engage in physical activities with their spouse. Their unhealthy eating habits also indicate a lack of commitment to self-care. For this reason, it's important to focus on eating healthy meals and getting outdoors regularly with your partner.
